I have created an arrangement of Stella By Starlight, which is one of the required repertoire for the Bass Extremes Solo Bass Contest. I will be posting it soon. All I need to do is add the TAB to complete it. I was going to record it, but I might just post a midi file for time's sake. Please check back here in the next day or so for the link.

I'm looking forward to hearing your arrangement. I forgot all about the Bass Extremes Solo Bass Competition! I'm looking at the ad right now... It's on page 75 of BP June issue (My email actually made it into "PlugIn: Your Letters and E-Mail"). Those prizes look nice! 1st place gets $10k, 2nd place gets $5k, 3rd place gets $3k, and 4th place gets $2k. The website is http://www.solobasscompetition.com.

When I first saw this page, I didn't think that it was something that I wanted to do. I thought to myself that the judges were probably going to look for the youngest talent than can play the most complicated solo with the most notes. They're probably going to look for someone that can slap, tap, and play harmonics at lightning speed. It might possibly be someone that can play a flury of notes with a right-hand 4-finger plucking technique. That's not what I do. Sure, I like to mess around with that stuff from time to time, but I don't spend too much time on it.

I know that I'm making a lot of assumptions here. Perhaps I'll give it a try. We'll see...

Well I arranged Stella. It is for 5 string bass. If you don't have 24 frets, don't play the melody in octaves

PS, plase note that my recording is a 4th higher than the written arrangement. This is becasue the arrangement is written for a standard 5 string and mine is tuned E,A,D,G,C.

Mike,

Neat arrangement. I enjoy the sound of your 535-24 "C". It has such a sweet clear sound. I also like the octaves. It has a Wes Montgomery flavor. Some of the rhythms don't match the 4/4 time signature. What program are you using for notation? I like it how clean everything looks. I use power tab if I want to tab something; however, it does not allow you to control over the standard notation.

Are you going to expand on the arrangement or are you going to send it in as you have recorded it?

I always enjoy hearing you play your bass. One of these days (maybe in retirement) I'll be the proud owner of a bass like yours.

It was pointed how to mew, how badly I screwed up the notation on Stella (mostly due to the fact that I have NO CLUE what a B string is )

They are now fixed.

The software I use is Encore by GVOX. It is really the simpleest and most comprehensive music notation software

Here is the chart that I created the arrangement from (key of Bb):

Pleas note that this is the key of my recording - to accomodate a standard 5 string, the arrangement that I did is in the key of F

Mike,

They have a winner: Jeff Schmidt. I read the interview, visited his website, then listened to the recordings on his "myspace" page. Jeff does some really great chordal playing. He plays a 5-string "high-C" MTD. His fretless is a 5-string Pedulla PentaBuzz. This gear sounds familiar to me... Anyhow, I thought that you might be interested since you are always looking to hear what's going on in the world of solo bass (and other isntruments).

Here is a quote from his interview that lists 2nd and 3rd place:
"Other finalists included Brazilian bass sensation Zuzo Moussawer and the Charlie Mingus Big Band bassist, Boris Kozlov, who finished in second and third places, respectively."
