I have been invited to write a lesson column, The Art of Solo Bass for Bassics Magazine. I will be presenting an arrangment of a tune, performance notes and then an in-depth study on how I created the arrangement. The very cool thing is that Bassics Mag comes with an enhanced CD featuring the music of the artists featured in the magaznie. On the CD will be a video of the performance. The first tune presented will be Saint James Infirmary.

Congrats on the new column in Bassics. I recently got my issue in the mail. Nice work on the video. Being able to see you play is a huge plus!

Some of the chord voicings are new to me. I am having some difficulty playing the arrangement because of my instrument. My P-Bass doesn't allow me to get to the 19th and 20th fret for chordal playing. The cutaway is too shallow (or maybe my hand is just too massive).

I tried tuning my bass up a whole step (double bass solo tuning). This helps; however, it changes the playability of the instrument greatly (mainly action and string tension). Also, I have to think of everything that is written down a whole-step.

Another option I tried was to leave the strings in normal tuning, but transpose the arrangement down a step. This work okay; however, the A7 in bar 4 (G7 transposed down a whole-step) becomes a little muddy on my bass.

Mike, do you have any spare MTD's laying around?

Joe
