Mike,
When I transcribe a tune, I feel a great sense of accomplishment. I am looking for something to transcribe. Do you have any suggestions? I have only transcribed bass lines to popular tunes; never solos.
What do you think about transcribing the head to a jazz standard? They are usually around 32 measures and I could "check my work" when I'm done.
People will usually tell me to transcribe something from "Kind of Blue". I know this is a legendary recording, but it never made a huge impression on me. I was listening to "The Sidewinder" CD by Lee Morgan today; I loved the melodic playing.
I guess I'm looking for something with a great melody, but not over the top. I haven't done a ton of transcriptions, so I'm not going to tackle Coltrane just yet. What do you suggest?

Joe transcription is a tool. Transcribe anything and everything. What do YOU like. Even if you only do a part of a tune. I was just working on a transcription of Tranes solo to Blue in Green (talking of Kind of Blue)with a student. Most of it is pretty easy. There is 1 very difficult run - so skip it. Once you transcribe then the important thing to do is to analyze the solo to see how the solo is approached (hint: trane's solo on Blue in Green is very much built around chord tones).

Mike,
I decided to transcribe Miles Davis's trumpet solo on Autumn Leaves (from Cannonball Adderley's "Somethin' Else"). This will be my first solo transcription effort.
As a first step, I figured out that he solos 2 times through the form. Right now, I am mapping out the rhythm. I suppose I could do the rhythm and pitches together, but I feel like breaking it down in this way might be a little less frustrating.
I will keep you posted on my progress.
Just curious... What is the most difficult transcription you ever completed?

Considering a combination of the song's difficulty and by level of experieince, I think it would be Portrait Of Tracy which I transcribed in 1979. Things come much easier these days

Mike,
I think that anything from Jaco would be a stretch for me right now. That WILL change over time.
My current transcription has been on hold a few days due to computer problems. I'm not using my computer to do the transcription; however, the computer has occupied most of my free-time. My old computer decided to display everything at 16 colors! My old computer is a 6 year old Windows machine. I went out and got myself a nice Mac laptop. Life is good.

Mike,
I am almost done with a transcription of the solo Miles does on Autumn Leaves (w/Cannonball Adderley).
He solos through the form 2 times. What the heck is going on with the rhythm in measures 7 & 8 (Gm7) the 2nd time through the form? It makes my head hurt. That little lick that he does starts at the end of the 6th bar. Can you help me save a few brain cells?
Thanks, Joe

I think the rhythm is a series of triplets with grace notes...
